Lesson #4
Applications of Solving Equations - 60 minutes
Materials Needed: Paper, pencil, red pen, worksheets, basic
function calculator
Objective: Students
will utilize and apply prior knowledge, along with new skills developed
surrounding one and two step equations, in order to solve non-routine
problems.
Warm-Up (20 minutes):
Begin class with a 10 minute entrance check on solving one and two step equations.
Student will then grade their own assessment for immediate feedback. Students will recognize what is confusing them and where they are struggling.
Instruction (35 minutes):
Students are given options to choose their review and practice based on their level of understanding on the entrance quiz.
Option 1 - Solving one and two step equations and justifying verbally.
Option 2 - Solving one and two step equations and justifying algebraically.
Option 3 - Solving rigorous multi step equations.
Option 4 - Solving word problems using knowledge of one and two step equations.
Closure (5 minutes):
Homework is to explain what they did incorrectly on the entrance quiz. Students should explain how they fixed their mistake and what they learned they should have done differently on the back of their entrance ticket. If a student made no mistakes, they should explain what they learned in class.
