Lesson #6

Practice Solving Quadratic Equations - 60 minutes

Materials Needed: Pencil, worksheet, basic function calculator, colored dots

Objective: In groups, students will develop methods to recall the quadratic formula, as well as determine which method is appropriate for given scenarios and utilize both the quadratic formula and zero-product property to solve equations.

Warm-Up (10 minutes):

The equations x^2-4x+4=0, 2x^2-3x-5=0, 2x^2+8x=-6, 9x^2=4+7x, and x^2-5x-14=0 will be posted around the room.  Student will place a pink dot where they would use the quadratic formula and an orange dot where they would use the zero-product property.

Students should be prepared to defend their answers and their thinking.

Instruction (35 minutes):

Students will share their reasonings, thoughts, and questions about each equation.  Engage in a whole class conversation and come to an agreement for each equation.

On their capture sheet students will record the equations posted and the methods we decided were best for each. They will then solve each quadratic for the missing variable.

Closure (15 minutes):

Students will complete a quick check for understanding.

Homework in 2 Khan Academy exercises.  Students should use their homework notebook to show work for each problem.

1. Quadratics by factoring

2. Quadratic formula
