Lesson #3

Solving One & Two-Step Equation - 80 minutes

Materials Needed: Pencil, worksheet, basic function calculator, glue/tape, and scissors

Objective: Using answer banks and scaffolding, students will work together to determine the appropriate ordering of steps to successfully isolate variable and solve one and two step equations.

Warm-Up (10 minutes):

Provide students an answer bank of possible justifications.  Students must isolate the variable, and give a step by step justification of solving the equation 2(x-6)=4x+7.

Instruction (60 minutes):

Students are learning to solve equations algebraically  Students we see that inverse operations are needed to "undo" what has happened to the variable.

Model explaining each step using properties of equality and justifications.

Students will complete an activity with four levels. In order for students to get the next level, they must accurately complete the level before.

As students complete all levels, they will complete extension

Closure (10 minutes):

Students will continue to practice with immediate feedback tonight, and they will have a small entrance quiz tomorrow.

Homework is three Khan Academy exercises - Students should use their homework notebook to show work for each problem.

1. Two step equations

2. One step addition & subtraction

3. One step multiplication & division
